Achieva Family Trust
Mission
Key Programs
Achieva Family Trust offers three types of low-fee trusts to protect and enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
- Pooled Trust: Achieva Family Trust operates the largest Pooled Trust in Pennsylvania and also serves several other states. The assets of all the beneficiaries in a Pooled Trust are combined (or “pooled”) for investment purposes. The trustee still separately accounts for each person’s interest. Trust accounts can be established quickly and at little or no cost. Any remaining funds, when the beneficiary passes away, are placed in a Charitable Residual Account that benefits individuals with disabilities.
- Payback Trust: Individuals with a disability who are receiving funds in their name, particularly as a result of a personal injury or a malpractice settlement, can benefit from a Payback Trust. It enables them to utilize the funds in their trust to pay for expenses that are not covered by government benefits. These include home modifications, adapted vehicles and specialized treatments or medications. The beneficiary continues to qualify for their government benefits, but upon the death of the beneficiary, any funds remaining must be used to “pay back” the state(s) for Medicaid Services received. Following this payback, the remaining funds are distributed to other individuals and/or organizations according to the trust document.
- Third Party Trust: With a Third Party Trust, friends and family of an individual with a disability can provide for their loved one while still preserving the individual’s eligibility for essential, lifelong supports and services. Funds remaining at the death of the beneficiary are distributed according to the trust document to other individuals and/or organizations.

Mission
Serving more than 1,000 people daily throughout the Delaware Valley, Inglis supports independent, community living by offering accessible, safe and affordable housing, innovative day programming, adapted technology and employment services.
Key Programs
- The Adapted Technology Program (ATP) at Inglis has connected people with physical disabilities to the world through technology for more than 20 years. Long recognized for its outstanding work with residents using the Inglis House Computer Lab, the program has recently expanded, through grant funding, so that people of all ages with disabilities throughout the Delaware Valley can increase their computer access and skills.
- Inglis Community-Based Services offers practical solutions to improve the quality of life and independence of people with physical disabilities. These services include accessible housing; an adult day program; care management; community employment; long term care; Drink-Aide®.
- Inglis Foundation, based in Philadelphia, PA, has 139 years’ experience providing housing and services for people with physical disabilities. Inglis serves nearly 1,000 people daily by providing nearly 300 accessible and affordable apartments, community services and long-term care for 252 residents.
- Self-Determination Housing of Pennsylvania (SDHP) is a statewide organization, recently having merged with Inglis as a program of their Community Services. SDHP advocates for accessible, affordable, and integrated housing opportunities for individuals with disabilities throughout the Commonwealth. Inglis SDHP works closely with partnering organizations, government institutions, and other entities to promote sensible public policies and inclusive regulatory rules in the field of accessible housing on behalf of individuals with disabilities.

Inglis has been in the field of assistive technology for over 35 years and is proud to support PATF in this event. The photo contest is an excellent way to visually tell the story of the diversity of assistive technology, its impact, and to celebrate the individuals who are using assistive technology to achieve their goals in life.
Assistive technology is a broad term for the products, equipment and tools that enable people to achieve greater levels of functioning in their daily life and/to support their overall health and wellbeing. Typically, assistive tech is associated with people with disabilities and older adults; however, many people who might not consider themselves part of those two groups of people also use assistive technology to live life more comfortably.
In my experience, AT often offers a simpler way for individuals to accomplish a particular goal in life, which can lead to improved self-confidence, community engagement, self-determination and independence. I have seen AT positively impact people’s lives in countless ways: I had the privilege of seeing a teenager with limited hand dexterity accelerate his rehabilitation after surgery by playing adapted video games that he otherwise could never access. I have individuals to eat for themselves, control their wheelchair, use their phone/mobile devices without assistance, drive to work, regain employment, direct their own health care, and control their cable box to be able to enjoy TV. Business Inclusion Group for People with Disabilities
Reed Smith’s award-winning Business Inclusion Group for people with disabilities at Reed Smith (LEADRS) was formed in 2012 and has grown to over 120 members across the firm. Their motto is: “Nurture Talent, Support Challenges and Celebrate Differences” and they aim to recruit talented individuals with disabilities and to advance their careers within Reed Smith. This year, they launched their Mental Health Task Force, a sub-group of LEADRS, for people who are experiencing or have experienced mental health difficulties. They have achieved a great deal over the last seven years but they are very conscious that there is more work to be done and they aim to continue to improve.
